Quick Start

Get up and running with Shout in under five minutes.

Tip

Shout is always recording. An always-on audio buffer continuously captures in the background (configurable from 1 to 48 hours, or unlimited) so you can retroactively transcribe anything — even conversations you didn't think to record.

The single-shortcut workflow

One shortcut does everything. No modes to switch, no menus to navigate.

  1. Press your global shortcut

    The default is Control + Space (customizable in Settings). This starts marking a segment.

  2. Speak naturally

    A floating orb with audio visualization appears on screen so you always know Shout is capturing.

  3. Press the shortcut again

    Shout stops the segment and transcribes it. With Parakeet, a live transcript has already been streaming in a card while you spoke.

  4. Your text appears automatically

    The transcript is shown in a notification card and handled by your paste action — pasted into the app you were in, or copied to the clipboard if you chose Copy Only.

8 paste actions — paste, paste and send, paste and save, replace, prepend, copy only and more — remembered per app. Workflows wrap your own prefix and suffix around every transcript, so it arrives as a prompt: start from one in the workflow store or write your own.

Menu Bar Access

Click the Shout icon in your menu bar to see recent transcriptions, access the timeline, and manage settings.

Tip

Tips for best results: Use a quality microphone, minimize background noise, speak at a natural pace, and enunciate clearly. Built-in Mac microphones work, but a dedicated USB mic or headset gives noticeably better accuracy.
